AMETHYST BEAD

(Silicone Dioxide SiO2)

Amethyst is a beautiful purple quartz.  Its color ranges from lilac to deep, dark purple.  It is a very popular gemstone and is used extensively in jewellery design.  The name Amethyst originated from the Greek meaning ‘not drunken’.  In ancient Greece people carried amethyst on their person and even carved wine goblets from amethyst in hopes of staving off the effects of alcohol.

Amethyst can occur in long prism shaped crystals or can form as crystalline crusts with pointed terminations.  Amethyst is very popular for its color and beautiful crystal shapes.

Not all amethyst is the same.  Different locales produce their very own unique quartz.  Amethyst mines can be found in Brazil, Uruguay, Africa, Italy, Germany, United States, and Canada.  The most noteworthy amethyst hails from the Ural Mountains in Russia.  A very clear, dark variety of amethyst is found in the mountains and are cut for very expensive gemstones.  Deep, dark purple quartz are also found in Guerro, Mexico.  These are among the most valuable amethyst in the world.

Some people feel amethyst has mystical power to increase spirituality and inner peace.  Others believe amethyst will aide with headaches, blood sugar imbalances, edginess, and facilitates healing.  It is often given as a symbol of sincerity, security and peace of mind.  Some people still believe it to be an antidote against intoxication.

The color purple is often used for royalty.  Amethyst has been used for centuries to adorn rich and powerful rulers.  Amethyst is the birthstone for February and the anniversary stone for the fourth and sixth years of marriage.  Traditionally used in jewellery settings, Amethyst is used in a variety of ornamental settings such as clocks, vases, bookends and more.   Amethyst is a beautiful affordable gemstone we can all enjoy.
